what's in a name?

This is where I feature a character from an anime and explain their name meanings. If you'd like to request a name meaning, let me know! ^_^

Name: Yukimura Seiichi
Anime: Prince of Tennis

Yukimura is a wonderful character that has lots of potential... His name is quite fitting to his character as well. "Yuki" is the kanji for peace or happiness, and "mura" means village. I think this reflects the serenity of his nature very well.

The more interesting part about his name is the fact that it stems from the historic Japanese war hero, Sanada Yukimura. A brilliant tactician and expert in the art of war, he almost led a successful campaign against the then-shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. He is ultimately betrayed and meets a tragic end. I think it's interesting indeed, that the powerhouse tennis team Rikkaidai's Captain (Yukimura) and Vice Captain (Sanada) are named after this true life hero.

"Sei" means soul or life force. This of course, speaks to Yukimura's passionate feelings toward tennis, and his incredible will to overcome his suffering to become greater than he is. Ichi is a common ending for a boy's name.

* Yugioh GX 18 *

Cool attack by Black Magician! Kagurazaka...doesn't he look awesome here? lol...

Yugioh GX Ep 18: vs. Yugi Deck (part 1)

I know everyone was highly anticipating this episode. Quite frankly, I just thought it was ok. It was great seeing all of Yugi's cards again, and the duel was pretty interesting. But it still feels rather episodic, like it doesn't have too much of a bearing on plot development. I've been quite patient with this series, because I realize they need to develop the characters and familiarize us with new cards, the school atmosphere, etc. But the story keeps repeating itself: Judai finds new dueling opponent, Judai wins, lessons learned. Repeat. Ultimately, I may just be upset by the fact that the best character so far has been MIA for so long. We'll have to wait until ep 24 for the return of Manjoume-san. T.T

The story opens with Judai walking up to the school store to discover a big crowd in front. He pushes his way to the front of the crowd to find Shou dueling a kid from Ra yellow. It turns out that Yugi's deck is being placed on display tomorrow, and the store was giving out tickets for the morning viewing! (there are flashbacks to Yugi's dueling...and an adorable shot of Pegasus & his Copy Cat monster...hehe). Shou and the Ra yellow kid (Kagurazaka - abbreviated to Kagu from now on) are facing off in a duel for the last remaing ticket. Shou's already got a ticket for himself, but this last one he is dueling so Judai can have a ticket too...ah, such a nice friend. (By the way, they specifically say that this Yugi deck does NOT have any god cards in it).

Shou has one Jetroid on his field, Kagu has two face down m/t cards. Duel continues. Kagu activates Heavy Storm. He's speaking with weird accent. ("Deja vu??" Judai says. Misawa explains that Kagu plays with a Chronos copy deck). Sure enough, the cards on the field were those same token monsters Chronos had. He sacrifices them to summon Antique Gear Golem. He attacks. Shou activates his Jetroid's special ability: when this card is targetted for attack, activate one trap card from your hand. He activates Magical Cylinder for the win. It turns out Shou knew Kagu played with a Chronos copy deck, and had constructed his deck accordingly.

Kagu is humiliated, as the kids laugh at him for losing to a red student. Misawa comforts him, but he has none of it, saying Misawa, who's practically in blue now, wouldn't understand his feelings.

Later that night, Judai and friends decide to sneek into the school for a peek at the Yugi deck before it goes on display in the morning. They get there and meet up with Misawa, who had the same thing in mind...

They hear a shout coming from the display room and rush in. Chronos is standing in front of a broken display case. The deck is missing. The kids make a bum rush for the door to report it immediately, and Chronos panicks, running after them and flattening them all (pretty funny scene ^^). But the kids know Chronos didn't take it...so they say they'll run to find the real thief!

Shou catches up with the thief first, who turns out to be Kagu, of course. It seems this kid researches strong duelists' decks, and tries to impersonate them completely and build a copy deck. He's confident that with a Yugi deck, he'll be unbeatable. He beats Shou in a flash. Judai, Misawa and Hayato rush in, and Judai challenges him to a duel. "Duel me, and if you lose, you'll return the deck."

* Duel *

Judai: Summons Burst Lady in defense.

Kagu: Fusion summons Chimera and attacks Burst Lady.

Judai: Fusion summons Thunder Giant. Activates its special ability to destroy Chimera. Kagu activates Chimera's effect to summon back Baffomet in defense. Judai destroys Baffomet with Thunder Giant.

Kagu: Places one m/t card face down. Activates Monster Reincarnation: discards one card from his hand to bring back one monster to his hand. He brings back Gazelle, and summons it in defense. Activates Swords of Revealing Light.

Judai: Summons Dark Catapulter in defense. (Hayato says this is good, b/c by this monster's effect, he can destroy one magic card in the next turn). But Kagu activates his trap, Black Magician's Revival Coffin...sacrifices Dark Catapulter & Gazelle to special summon Black Magician from the grave. Judai puts Thunder Giant in defense.

Kagu: Activates Thousand Knives to destroy Thunder Giant. Direct attack with Black Magician (v cool looking attack by BM!). (Judai LP: 1500).

Judai: Summons Friendock in defense.

Kagu: Destroys Friendock with Black Magician. Judai activates its effect to bring back Fusion and Burst Lady from grave.

Judai: Summons Burst Lady in defense. One face down m/t card. (Judai thinks to himself, the only monster in his deck with higher atk than BM is his E-hero Edgeman (2600 atk) which he has in his hand).

Kagu: Declares attack with BM. Judai activates his trap, A Hero Emerges. Kagu chooses the card to the right...it's Edgeman. Judai special summons it. Kagu activates instant magic card Baptism of Light and Dark: Sacrifice one BM on the field to special summon either from hand, deck or grave one BM of Chaos. He activates its ability: when it's successsfully summoned, place one magic card from grave to hand (he chooses Monster Reincarnation). He attacks Edgeman with BM of Chaos. (Judai LP: 1300).

Judai thinks: "Such power...the person I am dueling against is truly...Mutou Yugi!!"
Rating: It's fun to see some familiar faces...

Next Week: vs. Yugi Deck (part 2)
We'll see Black Magician Girl! It also looks like Judai activates Sky Scraper (I really like this card for some reason).
